Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS)

CPAWS protects wilderness in every corner of B.C. and deep into the ocean. They create and safeguard large parks and protected areas.

In 1987 huge glass sponge reefs, which were once thought to be extinct, were found near Haida Gwaii. Marine biologists and conservationists were stunned and amazed. In 2001 more reefs were found in the Strait of Georgia, within sight of Vancouver. In 2016 CPAWS launched a website in support of their national campaign to create a new Marine Protected Area to preserve the glass sponge reefs.
