Immunize BC: Evidence-Based Vaccine Information

  • Health

ImmunizeBC is a collaborative project involving the BC Ministry of Health, the BC Centre for Disease Control, regional health authorities, the BC Pharmacy Association, and the Public Health Association of BC. They work toward their mission of improving the health of British Columbians and reducing the number of vaccine-preventable diseases by providing evidence-based immunization information. They also offer resources and tools to make it easier for BC residents to get vaccinated.

the challenge

Optimizing for growth

ImmunizeBC has a continuously evolving and growing collection of vaccine information that needs to be easy for all BC residents to find. We recognized the site was no longer delivering this essential information in a seamless way - both from a structural and design standpoint. Because of how content was organized, it wasn’t able to scale, making updating and organizing the information difficult for their team, and design elements were not being used as well as they could be to guide interactions. The resulting user experience was not always intuitive, relevant or mobile-friendly.

the solution

Audience-based menu and prioritized FAQ

Much of the information about vaccinations is based on age. With that in mind, we created two menus based on age group - one for children and another for adults - to better organize the content. As adults are often looking for information about children in their care, a menu dedicated to this specific age group provided them with a clear path to find this content.

To further help audiences with quick access to information we also tackled the FAQ content by creating space for it on the homepage. This functionality invites users to pick from the most popular questions or do a search to find the most relevant question and answer without navigating the site. Links to the FAQ page and the heavily used Find a Clinic tool were added to the meta navigation bar at the top of the site for another wayfinding option.

A fresh new look

Along with the functional improvements, we refreshed the look and feel of the site to better reflect the diversity of the audiences seeking information about immunization in BC. For visual interest and a more modern feel, we introduced new iconography, updated the hero images and added coloured information blocks to landing pages. These changes helped to present content more clearly and reduce decision fatigue for site visitors seeking specific information.
