Wilderness Committee: Defending Nature Together

  • Environment

Since 1980, the Wilderness Committee has been one of Canada's most dedicated voices for nature, wildlife and the climate. Through grassroots organizing, public campaigns and on-the-ground advocacy, they work to permanently protect ecosystems, defend at-risk species and build a more just and sustainable future for communities across the country.

The Challenge

Transforming content complexity and UX challenges

The Wilderness Committee has been doing powerful, multifaceted work for over 45 years, but their website did not fully reflect that legacy. As the organization grew and its campaigns evolved, so did the complexity of their content, making it increasingly difficult for visitors to understand the full scope of their impact and see how individual campaigns connected to the broader mission. They needed a more cohesive digital presence, one that could match the depth of their work and make it easier for supporters to find their place within it.

The solution

Redesigning for clarity and engagement

We began where we believe all good digital work should start, with a deep understanding of the organization, its audiences, and its content. Through a comprehensive content audit and content strategy process, we mapped out the landscape of the Wilderness Committee's existing digital presence, identifying gaps, inconsistencies, and opportunities to better connect their campaigns to their broader mission. We explored audience needs and user journeys to understand what different visitors were looking for and where the experience was falling short of their expectations.

Those insights shaped every decision in the redesign. Working in close collaboration with the Wilderness Committee's team, we developed a fully refreshed website built around clarity, storytelling and conversion. New templates, dynamic content components and an intuitive navigation system make it easier for visitors to explore campaigns, understand their impact and take meaningful action, whether that means donating, signing up or getting involved in their community. Accessibility was also central to the work, with the new site conforming to WCAG 2.2 Level AA standards.

Adapting to evolving needs

The result is a modern, visually engaging website that gives the Wilderness Committee the flexibility to create and manage content as their campaigns and organization grow. They are especially happy with the visual design and the new ability to build dynamic content pages that adapt to their evolving needs. Building on this foundation, we are continuing to enhance the site together, ensuring it remains a relevant and impactful tool for the work ahead.
